Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson (www.tarvarisjackson7.com) has signed a one-year tender to stay with the Minnesota Vikings.

Jackson, who was a restricted free agent, will earn $1.176 million.

“I’m just happy to be a Viking for another year,” Jackson said. “I’m looking forward to a great season.”

The second-round pick out of Alabama State in 2006 served as a backup to future Hall of Famer Brett Favre in 2009 and appeared in eight games. The fifth-year team veteran has 19 career starts with 21 career touchdowns passing and four rushing.

Now he waits to see whether or not he will have a shot at starting behind center for the NFC North Division champions, depending on whether or not Favre returns for another season. Vikings coach Brad Childress has said if Favre decides to retire he is content going with Jackson or backup Sage Rosenfels.

Jackson has been the starting quarterback for the Vikings at various points in his first four seasons in the NFL. He had various degrees of success as a starter, including leading the team to an 8-4 record as the No. 1 QB in 2007. But this season he sat behind Favre, playing in seven games, throwing 21 passes and completing 14 for 201 yards.

His best season was 2007, when he completed 171 of 294 passes for 1,911 yards and nine TDs, though he did throw 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 260 yards and three touchdowns that season.

For his career, Jackson, 27, is 320-for-545 passing for 3,643 yards with 21 touchdowns, 18 interceptions and 112 carries for 466 yards and 4 TDs.

Tarvaris Learns from the Best
by Playerpress Wire Service / December 31, 2009

Tarvaris Jackson was a starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings at various points of his first three seasons in the NFL.

In his fourth year, 2009, he was a backup. But if you’re going to be a reserve QB, you want to do it behind a Hall of Fame signal caller like Brett Favre.

Jackson had various degrees of success as a starter, including leading the team to an 8-4 record as the No. 1 QB in 2007. But this season he had the chance to learn from Favre, and the former 2nd-round draft pick out of Alabama State knows his next chance is right around the corner.

“For me, since Day 1 I always knew it was a process to make it in the NFL,” Jackson said. “Injuries kind of slowed me down and I’m waiting for another opportunity. I always tell myself it’s out of my hands, let God handle it. Go with the flow because you can only control so much.”

Jackson has gotten into seven games this season, throwing 15 passes and completing 10 for 159 yards.

His best season was 2007, when he completed 171 of 294 passes for 1,911 yards and nine TDs, though he did throw 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 260 yards and three touchdowns that season.

For his career, Jackson, 26, is 306-for-524 passing for 3,442 yards with 20 touchdowns, 18 interceptions and 95 carries for 476 yards and 4 TDs.
